Welcome to Sweet Jilly Designs
An online shop with a community connection.
I’ve always loved clothes and have a real passion for fashion. As a child I wanted to wear my party dress everywhere, as a teenager I loved distinctive clothes (thank goodness there was no instagram back then). I remember the excitement of having money in my pocket, emerging at Oxford Circus and heading down into Top Shop to find the perfect outfit.
I wanted to work in retailing but I went into financial services when I didn't get the job I wanted..... I stayed for quite some time in the City and retail therapy became my thing. I was still in fashion, but as a keen and very regular shopper. I started to discover the world of hand crafted fashion and jewellery and loved to buy pieces that you didn’t find everywhere.
When I moved to Bahrain in 2006 to live and work and I found it easier to get pieces made in the local tailors, much more fun than shopping in the vast shopping Malls.
Finding lovely fabrics and using skilled tailors. What more could a girl want?
Sweet Jilly Designs is born
Roll on 10 years, and I decide to take some time to travel so I take time off to think about ‘what next?’ Sweet Jilly Designs came to mind, creating a line of clothes for people like me. I was often asked where I got my clothes and people like the East/West twist.
When I got back from my travels I decided to set myself a goal. I wanted to help The Saturday Biryani Club with workers, this is a community group I was working with plus I wanted create a fashion line. I decided to try to do both at once.
#kaftansforacause was born and at a pop-up shop last November I raised twice my target for the Saturday Biryani Party with workers. I discovered true pleasure in the accomplishment. People have asked for more clothes and I’ve been making more scarves and particular orders for clothes that have been sent to Australia, America and the UK.
What I want to do now is to continue the work.
This online shop is one way, I hope that you like the clothes and the ideas.
Things I dream of doing
To travel, to find inspiration, to create fashion that people love, buy and wear a lot.
Eventually to do three trips a year with pop-up events in Bahrain and London, perhaps a trunk show in Melbourne.
I want to support the people who make the work, to reward them for their craftsmanship and talent.
I want to raise money to help migrant workers, I would love to support access to education.
I also believe in pursuing dreams and hope my little adventure inspires other people to pursue their dreams at my age and stage of life.
